Why Flatten Your Records?
Even slight warps can negatively affect playback by causing your cartridge to mis-track, introducing distortion and reducing overall sound quality.
The Pro-Ject Flatten it uses carefully controlled heat and pressure to safely and effectively flatten warped LPs, helping restore optimal playback performance.
How Record Warps Affect Sound?
A flat record allows the tonearm and cartridge to maintain a consistent Vertical Tracking Angle (VTA) throughout playback. When a record is warped, the cartridge constantly moves up and down, causing changes in Vertical Tracking Force (VTF).
As the stylus climbs a warp, tracking force increases. At the crest of the warp, the cartridge becomes partially unloaded, reducing tracking force as it descends. These continual variations can result in:
- Reduced tracking accuracy
- Increased distortion
- Changes in tonal balance
- Less precise imaging and soundstage
- Greater stylus and record wear
Flattening your records helps the stylus maintain consistent contact with the groove, resulting in cleaner, more stable playback and allowing you to enjoy your vinyl collection at its best.
You will be followed up with an email from our team confirming booking time & dates for your service
FAQ
Can any record be flattened?
Most warped vinyl records can be successfully flattened using the Pro-Ject Flatten it. However, results depend on the severity of the warp and the condition of the record.
Records with mild to moderate warping typically respond very well to the flattening process. Extremely warped, heat-damaged, cracked, or physically deformed records may not be fully restorable and, in some cases, may not be suitable for treatment.
If you're unsure whether your record can be flattened, feel free to contact us with details or photos, and we'll be happy to assess it before proceeding.
The following LPs should not be treated in flattening device:
1) LPs weighing less than 110g
2) Light LPs that were manufactured between 1973-74 (Oil crisis) weights range from 100g to 115g.
3) Flexi-Disc
4) EP versions
5) SP versions
6) LPs made of special materials
7) LPs made by Sheffield Lab
8) LPs made by BMG-UFA
9) Acetate (lacquer) discs
10) Bakelite (or shellac) records, which are commonly 78 RPM records manufactured before the 1950s, are much more brittle than vinyl. They do not soften and reform in the same way as PVC and can crack, fracture, or suffer permanent damage when subjected to the heat and pressure used during the flattening process.
Can you guarantee my record will be flattened and restored 100%?
Although the LP Flattener successfully flattens most records, results cannot be guaranteed. Groove AUDIO accepts no liability if the customer is, for whatever reason not satisfied with the results produced by Pro-Ject Flatten It, or if a customer's LP is damaged.
